October Week 4: “The Promise of Peace”

ree

Breaking Down the Verse:

 1.   "Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him..." (Psalm 37:7)

  • The command to "rest" and "wait" is a profound counter-cultural instruction. In a world that values constant activity and instant gratification, God invites us to a different way of living. Resting in the Lord is not about being passive; it is about encouraging yourself and finding your peace and security in His character, not in your circumstances. Waiting patiently means trusting His timing, even when it feels like nothing is happening.

  • Questions for Reflection: What is the hardest part about waiting on God for you?

  • What do you do when things aren’t happening as fast as you want them to?

2.      "...do not fret when people succeed in their ways..." (Psalm 37:7):

  • The second half of this verse addresses one of the biggest challenges to our trust: comparison. When we see others who are not living by God’s principles appear to succeed, or even those who may live according to God’s word, it can cause us to doubt and "fret" or become anxious. God tells us to not be moved by the success of others. Our focus should be on Him, not on what others are doing. Our reward is not of this world. Making the choice to be steadfast, unmovable, abounding and working in the presence of the Lord is what God desires. Having a posture of faith, resilience and humbleness is the righteous way.

  • Question for Reflection: How does comparing your path to someone else's affect your peace? What would it look like to truly focus on your relationship with God this week, without getting distracted by what others are doing?

A Personal Testimony:

I used to spend a lot of time "fretting" over things that were totally out of my control. I knew they were things I couldn’t change, but because I cared so much, I believed there was actually something I could do to reverse them. This led to a lot of frustration, stress and anxiety. It was not until I intentionally stepped away from those things that burdened me and committed to focusing only on my own journey that I found peace again. Sometimes you literally have to surrender, step back and say, “God, I’m giving this to you”. Remember, we call that rolling it over to God. The moment I stopped worrying, my focus returned to God's plan for my life, and I felt a sense of clarity I hadn't had in a long time. That experience taught me that true peace is not found in a lack of problems, but in a relentless focus on the one who is ultimately in control.

Application For The Week:

This week, let’s practice intentional rest and patience. When you feel tempted to worry or stress, take a moment to pray and thank God for the unique path He has set for you. Practice resting in His presence, even if it’s for just a few minutes a day, and observe how your anxiety begins to fade away as you do.
